NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF UNDER FIVE CHILDREN AND ITS DETERMINANT FACTORS IN JONGGOL AND CITEUREUP SUB-DISTRICTS, BOGOR DISTRICT

ABSTRACT

A cross sectional survey was conducted in Bogor district, West Java Province, on 8-21 April 2005. General objective of the study was to assess the nutritional status of under five children and its determinant factors in Jonggol and Citeureup Sub district. Study area was purposively selected due to its high prevalence of underweight (31.2%).
Total children had been surveyed in this area were 355. Two set of questionnaire were used in interview, one for mother and another for children. The questionnaire for observation was used which covered housing condition and ownership of household appliances, and the completeness of immunization in KMS. Anthropometric measurement was done in each respondent (mothers and children). Observation, Focus group discussion and secondary data information were also incorporated.
Result from this study showed that 25.1% of children were stunting, stunted children in Citeureup (30.9%) were higher than Jonggol (19.4%). In general this area had medium prevalence of stunting. A total 25.4% of children under five was underweight and 7.6% of under five children was wasted, prevalence of underweight was high and prevalence of wasted was medium. Prevalence of stunting was higher in Citeureup (30.9%) than Jonggol sub district (19.4%). Prevalence of underweight children was similar between sub districts. Wasting prevalence in Jonggol (10.6%) was higher than Citeureup (4.6%). There were tendency that nutritional status of children getting worse (older children age group, mean of HAZ, WAZ and WHZ close to -2 SD).
It was found that nutritional status of children under-five was significantly associated with food intake of dark green leaf vegetable, household experience in difficulties to obtain food, incidence of acute respiratory infection, personal hygiene, caring capacity, nutritional status of mother, education of mother ≥10 years, and low birth weight history.
Extensions on exclusive breast, proper feeding practice, personal hygiene should be delivered should be strongly encourage to the mothers through in this area through Posyandu and health services. Improving cadre and health worker’s skill and promoting the importance of health and support the utilization of Posyandu and Puskesmas also recommended.
